Virtual Fly Lab- Welcome to the Virtual Transgenic Fly Lab. The lab will familiarize you with the science and techniques used to make transgenic flies. Transgenic organisms, which contain DNA that is inserted experimentally, are used to study many biological processes. In this lab, you will create a transgenic fly to study circadian rhythms. (Click here for more on experimental design.) The fly glows only when a certain gene involved in circadian rhythms is activated. After making the glowing fly, you will use it to explore basic principles of circadian biology and genetics. InterroBang Students form teams and complete missions outside of school for points. There are four mission categories: science, culture, creativity, or exploration. When missions are complete the teams are awarded points by the moderators of the site. They must prove they completed their mission by documenting it and uploading their "evidence" (usually video). Teams interact with other teams around the country, form alliances, create their own missions, and compete against each other. Many of the missions are service oriented and would lend themselves well to a student council or andy club whose purpose is to help the community. All the missions teach critical thinking, problem solving, and encourage creativity across multiple disciplines.
